A SHORT HISTORY

Fes is the oldest Kings-city of Morocco. It is here you can see the living history of the country! Fes is UNESCO World Heritage and it is not only just because of the ancient architecture... Here you find yourself in times long gone by of thousand and one Arabian nights. The ancient medina of Fes is only open to visitors who travel by foot.

Fes has been founded in 789 by Idriss the first at the right bank of the river Fes. Nineteen years later his son built a city at the left bank. He named this city El-Alya. Moslims who were driven out of Cordoba (Spain), came over in 818 to these two cities to find a save place. Later on refugies from other places (Tunesia) came to Fes. The city became the centre of Islamic culture of Morocco. In the second half of the eleventh century the Almoravids built a wall aorund both cities, and thus united the two into one.
From 1145 fes became the main cultural city of Morocco. It was taken by the Almohads after a long war and a university was founded there.
